因为既然在传统命理中，出生年的地支（即生肖）也只是“八字”中的一字，“四柱”中的一柱，而年份对一个人的影响，甚至没有月、日和时来得重要。两个人合不合，必须参考整个“八字”，也就是由年、月、日、时的天干地支所形成的“四柱命盘”，这样才能够正确论断。若只凭差六岁就断定犯冲，那只是很概括的说法，并不是非常准确，往往造成很多误差。
由于普遍认为生肖“六冲”不利婚姻的观念，导致天下许多有情人不能成为眷属，不是父母干扰，就是男女双方在心理上有障碍。很多时候，为什么男性更愿意娶比自己小的女性，而女性也乐于嫁给年长的男性，是因为这样才能最大限度地保证后代的健康，以及家庭的稳定。
